I knew we were in for a treat at the Foxhunter after we spent two minutes talking about the taste of the bread rolls. If a chef puts that much effort into the simplest part of a meal what could we expect from the rest of the menu? After three courses we had the answer. Fantastic food.
The Foxhunter is set in beautiful countryside in the village of Nantyderry in Monmouthshire. On arrival in the Grade II listed former railway stationmaster's house we had a warm welcome from Lisa Tebbutt who runs it with her chef husband Matt.
The lighting, a combination of tealight candles and sunken ceiling spotlights, gave a cosy atmosphere and we knew we had an unhurried night ahead. The singer Jack Johnson was playing in the background. A log-burning stove completed the contemporary look.
A couple on a nearby table were finishing their meal as we were seated. But they were not in a rush to leave and spent the next hour enjoying each other’s company.
We stuck to mineral water but did have a look at the long wine list. As a beer lover I was impressed with the selection of bottled beers, including several tasty sounding real ales.
Baked buffalo mozzarella with aubergine, Parmesan and tomatoes (£7.95) and Longhorn lasagne bolognese (£6.95) gave us a wonderful start to the night.
Our meal was also a celebration. My wife was 26 weeks pregnant the same day we visited so it was a sort of birthday party without alcohol. A minute after she finished her rump of lamb, new potatoes, French beans, shallot and caper sauce (£15.95), the baby kicked in her stomach. I think he or she enjoyed the fine food as well. There was a similar happy feeling in my stomach after my roast cod, flageolet beans & salsa verde (£15.95). The cod came apart in perfect bite size slivers with each gentle cut of my knife. The Welsh rarebit with onion chutney (£6.95) caught my eye for dessert and it was an excellent choice. Despite the pregnancy my wife found room for Seville orange sponge pudding and clotted cream (£6.95). It was the finale to three wonderful courses of food and a perfect night. We drove off down the country lanes trying to decide who would baby-sit for us on our next visit.
