The Harvest Treat
Nettle tea, sloe gin, blackberry pie and mushrooms on toast: it’s all out there in the woods in October, just waiting for you to pop it in your hand-woven reed basket. Foraging has become the autumn activity of our age, combining nostalgia, fresh air, eco-sensitivity and kitchen craft in a peaceful, healthful day out. To get the best out of it, though, you need a little expert guidance - which you can combine with a stylish country pub break at the Foxhunter, in Nantyderry, Monmouthshire.
In stunning countryside between the River Usk and the Brecon Beacons, the Foxhunter has acquired a gilded reputation for its cookery - and, if you book a foraging break, you can literally pick the menu. Treats on offer in the locality include samphire, sea spinach, elderberries and, in October, acres of tasty, nonfatal mushrooms (that’s where the experienced guide comes in handy), all of which you can haul back to the pub kitchen for a lesson in wild-food preparation.
Foraging and lunch outings cost £60pp for the first couple, and £35pp for any more; self-catering cottages cost £125 a night, with a two-night minimum stay at the weekend.
